How to Become a Model
• Take Advantage of Every Opportunity: Real opportunities can be few and far between in the beginning so take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way. Teen Prom, Teen Vogue, Seventeen Magazine and others hold open calls and castings and, if selected, the experience and exposure you get can be life changing.
• Online Contests: Search online for modeling events but stick with the big names like Teen Vogue, Teen Prom, Seventeen Magazine, etc. There could be modelling events where they are involved in. You can also participate in small and large modelling events in your area but don't get involved with no-name 'pay to play' magazines or events as virtually all of them will turn out to be an expensive mistake at best. Get your parents permission if under 18 and have your photos and stats ready as you will need them.
• Do Some Research: Get to know what real model look like in their photos but, whatever you do, resist the temptation to emulate the full blown glamazon looks you see in fashion magazines as that will not work for a beginner model. Instead, think fresh young and natural (FYN) as that will get you in the door a whole lot quicker.
• Height Requirements: Sure, most haute couture runway and fashion magazine models are tall and thin but modeling opportunities do exist for other types of models including real people, commercial print, sports and lifestyle types.
* Scouting Events and Conventions: Scouting events and modeling conventions can be very hit and miss depending on who is sponsoring them. If you are asked to attend a 'free casting opportunity' of some kind at a local hotel, for example, it will very likely turn out to be a miss. Again, avoid 'pay to play' events and stick with the most recognizable names (Polo Ralph Lauren, Gap, IMG, etc) and top magazines instead.
• Always Work With Great Photographers: Great photos will open doors for you and amateur looking photos will do just the opposite - so choose the photographers you will be working with very carefully. Sometimes agency referred photographers can be great and sometimes not depending on how reputable the agency is. Does the cost of the shoot seem high and the quality of the work seem low? Then you are probably with an agency that is charging you big money for photo shoots and pocketing most or all of the money which is not only highly unethical it is specifically illegal in some states including Florida, New York and California.
• Photo Shoots, Portfolios and Comp Cards: All successful working models have portfolios and comp cards and top agencies, top fashion designers, magazine editors and casting directors will expect you to have them.
• America’s Next Top Model? Sure, if you get the chance, do it, but You never know where the doors to opportunity opens so don’t miss the chance to participate in America’s Next Top Model contest hosted by Tyra Banks, as it is one of the most popular reality shows for models.
